The Thomas Jefferson hotel was founded around 1929, being the premier hotel of Birmingham. It had orcheastra's straight from New York playing in it's grand ballrooms. It had an impressive 2 story lobby that featured giant ceiling ornaments, the rest being laced with marble and granite. George Wallace had his own residence there, Mickey Rooney had stayed there. By the 1970's downtown Birmingham had become a poor place, the hotel was going under. By 1981 the hotel had became $200 a month apartments, before it was declared uninhabitable in 1983, never to be touched again. In 2005 Leer Corp. bought the building with plans to turn it into 64 lofts, the plan went through and the building returned to foreclosure. Asbestos is flaking around the floor, The basement is flooded by and underground stream, the homeless are making there homes in the lower floors. The hotel needs to be saved or else it might have to be taken down! Leer Corp. Had a dream, Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and the immigrants arriving at ellis island in New York all had a dream, to start new life, a new world. This building can be saved! We just need everyone to stand up for a cause and make this building the luxury it once was! I first noticed the building on my recent trip to Birmingham Alabama, I read all night for 2 nights about the building and now I can't stand to see it go down like this. Though I am far away in Chicago... I can still help, no matter where you are... you can help too! Stand up and save this building!
